The 548th Inaugural Lecture of University of Ibadan was delivered by the renowned scholar of Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology, Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on Thursday 18th of April, 2024.
Delving into the intricacies of his lecture titled “The Human Workhorse and Microbial Afflictions: Hepatitis B, Its Fatal Sting and the Tragic Trajectory,” Professor Otegbayo elucidated on the pivotal role of the liver in maintaining bodily functions, while highlighting its vulnerability to diseases arising from exposure to harmful substances carried in the bloodstream.
Central to his message was the imperative of preemptive measures against liver cancer and other health afflictions, with a primary objective of enhancing life expectancy within the populace.
He advocated for a multifaceted approach to combat viral hepatitis and liver malignancies, proposing the establishment of specialized facilities dedicated to infectious and hepatic ailments, alongside a push for affordable healthcare services to facilitate widespread access to treatment and preventive measures.
At the core of his discourse was a pressing call for governmental action towards healthcare reform, urging the implementation of Universal Healthcare and strategies to address the imminent surge in population, forecasted to reach 401 million by 2050.
Professor Otegbayo underscored the potential strain this population expansion could exert on healthcare resources, emphasizing the necessity for substantial investments in infrastructure and the training of healthcare professionals.
