
OYSIEC Fixes January 16, 2027 for Oyo LG Elections, Assures Credible Poll
The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has assured residents of the state of a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process as it fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the conduct of the forthcoming local government council elections in Oyo State.
The decision was reached at the end of the commission’s inaugural meeting with its management team, held at the OYSIEC Headquarters, Agodi, Ibadan.
The meeting, presided over by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, provided an opportunity for members to deliberate and strategize on how to successfully deliver the commission’s mandate of conducting a peaceful and acceptable local government election.
In a statement made available to newsmen by the OYSIEC Chairman, the commission announced that the elections would be conducted in all polling units across the thirty-three (33) local government councils in the state between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the scheduled date.
The statement further disclosed that electioneering campaigns will end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027, while any supplementary or re-run election, if necessary, will hold on Saturday, January 23, 2027.
According to the statement, the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the thirty-three local government councils in the state will expire on May 23, 2027, in line with the provisions of the Local Government Law of Oyo State (as amended)
It added that the commission is empowered under Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended) to issue notice of elections not later than 360 days before the election date.
The statement read in part:
“Pursuant to the provisions of Section 28 of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), Section 5(a), and Paragraph 1 of Schedule II of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, Cap 154, Laws of Oyo State, Nigeria, 2000, notice is hereby given that the local government council elections shall be conducted in all polling units in the thirty-three (33) local government councils in Oyo State on Saturday, January 16, 2027, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.”
The commission also called on political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with OYSIEC to ensure the successful conduct of free, fair, credible, and transparent elections on the scheduled date.
