NUT Mourns Teacher Killed In Ahoro-Esinele Attack, Demands Release Of Abducted Principal, Pupils

The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed grief over the killing of a teacher, Mr. Joel Adesiyan, during the recent attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community.

The Union also condemned the abduction of the Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, alongside some pupils kidnapped during the incident.

In a statement jointly signed by the state Chairman of the Union, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, on Friday, the NUT described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers teachers face while carrying out their duties.

According to the Union, the slain teacher was wearing the official NUT uniform at the time of the attack, stressing that his death was particularly heartbreaking because he died while serving the nation and contributing to the education of children.

The Union condemned what it described as a senseless act of violence, insisting that no teacher should lose his or her life in the line of duty.

“The incident has sent shockwaves across the education sector. No teacher should ever pay the ultimate price simply for carrying out the sacred responsibility of educating and nurturing the future of our country,” the statement read.

The NUT said it stands in solidarity with the family of the deceased teacher, the affected school community, and teachers working under difficult and threatening conditions.

The Union also extended condolences to the wife, children, relatives, and colleagues of the late teacher, praying for strength for the family during the period of mourning.

While calling on governments at all levels to strengthen security around schools, especially in vulnerable communities, the Union also urged authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abducted principal and pupils.

“Teachers must not be left unprotected. The safety of educators is integral to the survival of the education system itself,” the Union added.

The NUT further assured that it would continue to support the bereaved family and advocate justice for the slain teacher.
