Military ordnance explodes in Kano, kills five, injures many

An explosive device blast has killed five persons and left several others with varying degrees of injuries at Hotoro Eastern Bypass in Kano metropolis, The Guardian gathered.

The suspected ordnance exploded at a large metal scrap collection company in the early hours of Saturday, triggering panic and causing residents of the area to scamper for safety.

Although normalcy has been restored in the area, residents are still living in fear of a likely bomb attack, even with the presence of security personnel who have already cordoned off the area.

Police Commissioner in Kano, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, who visited the scene of the explosion, confirmed the blast may have originated from a military ordnance believed to have been improperly handled in the company. 

I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion—possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,” the official said.

He added that the victims were quickly evacuated, with some taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

According to him, the situation is still under investigation, but it is understood the vehicle involved may have come from Yobe State. Preliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors.

He added that authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion or the ownership of the explosives. Security agencies are currently investigating the incident.
