Kaduna Explosion: DICON Explains Cause of Blast at Its Factory

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) has reported that expired materials were the cause of the explosion that occurred at its factory in Kaduna on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries.

In a statement issued by DICON’s Public Relations Officer, Maria Sambo, the military clarified that the incident took place during the disposal of outdated production materials.

The statement details: “On Saturday, 20 September 2025, at approximately 10 am, an explosion transpired at the DICON Ordnance Factory Disposal pit, leading to one death and several injuries.

“Certain old storage bunkers, which were utilized for storing raw materials for production, contained numerous expired materials that had surpassed their usable lifespans, including a significant amount of Ammonia Nitrates, Primer Caps, Propellants, and other items.

“DICON had previously commenced efforts in July 2025 to ensure the safe disposal of these expired materials and had successfully eliminated all Ammonia Nitrates along with the majority of other items.

“Nevertheless, the tragic explosion occurred while specialists were finalizing the destruction of the remaining expired materials at the disposal pit on Saturday, 20 September 2025.

“The injured personnel from DICON are currently receiving medical care at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna, while the body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary.”

DICON expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured, while reassuring the public that there is no need for concern.

“The local community is assured that DICON, as a responsible and professional organization, has implemented operational safety measures to the highest standards, allowing them to continue their daily activities without worry. The remaining materials have been rendered safe.

“In light of this, a Board of Inquiry has been established to investigate the immediate cause of this unfortunate incident,” the statement concluded.
