Guber Aspirant, Ajadi Hails Journalists as Society’s True Gatekeepers

A governorship aspirant in Oyo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi, has described journalists as the true gatekeepers of Nigerian society, urging them to continue setting a positive and development-driven agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ajadi stated this in Ibadan on Sunday during an interactive session with reporters, where he emphasised that media professionals, not politicians, largely determine the tone and direction of national discourse.

“Media practitioners, not politicians, gatekeep for the country by setting good agendas that help the nation grow,” he said. “Journalists are the real gatekeepers of society. Without journalists, politicians are not going anywhere. The way journalists shape society determines what that society becomes, and it is our duty to ensure that this influence is positive.”

Ajadi, who is also a journalist, noted that the media plays a critical role in spotlighting societal needs and drawing government attention to issues requiring urgent action.

He added that the media equally acknowledges and publicises government achievements for the benefit of the public.

“If it is a case of bad roads needing repair, journalists will expose it. These responsibilities are what make journalists the true gatekeepers,” he said.

Speaking on his political ambition, Ajadi reiterated his commitment to serving the state and contributing to national development.

“If I do not become governor, and eventually president of this country, it would mean the assignment God has given me has not been fulfilled,” he said.

“I want to serve at the state level and demonstrate the capacity with which I intend to develop Nigeria as president.”

Ajadi commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his performance, stating that governance is a continuum and that his administration, if elected, would build on existing achievements while introducing fresh ideas for accelerated growth.

“Our leader, Governor Seyi Makinde, has performed well. When I get there, we will introduce additional activities and styles to further transform Oyo State,” he said.

The PDP aspirant expressed strong optimism about his chances in the 2027 governorship race, reaffirming his readiness to lead Oyo State into a new phase of development.
