Cooking gas prices soar 33% in June – Report

The cost of refilling cooking gas in Nigeria surged in June 2025, with prices for a 12.5kg cylinder rising by 33.52 per cent compared to the same month last year, according to a new report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) climbed to ₦21,010.56 in June 2025, up from ₦15,736.27 recorded in June 2024. On a month-on-month basis, the price also rose by 1.46 per cent from ₦20,709.11 in May 2025.

For smaller households using 5kg cylinders, the average refill price increased by 19.49 per cent year-on-year from ₦6,966.03 in June 2024 to ₦8,323.95 in June 2025. Month-on-month, the price saw a 1.92 per cent increase from ₦8,167.43 in May.

Delta State topped the chart for the highest gas prices in the country. Residents paid an average of ₦9,243.38 to refill a 5kg cylinder and ₦23,108.44 for a 12.5kg cylinder. Cross River and Rivers followed closely, with refill prices exceeding ₦9,000 for 5kg and ₦22,900 for 12.5kg.

In contrast, Oyo State recorded the lowest price for a 5kg refill at ₦7,100.00, while Yobe posted the lowest cost for a 12.5kg refill at ₦19,000.00. Other states with relatively cheaper prices included Plateau (₦7,200.00 for 5kg) and Niger (₦19,242.48 for 12.5kg).

Zonal analysis showed that the South-South zone had the highest average retail prices for both cylinder sizes ₦8,871.63 for 5kg and ₦22,179.08 for 12.5kg. The South-East followed closely, while the South-West recorded the lowest regional averages at ₦7,960.42 and ₦20,402.42 respectively.

The report is based on data collected by over 700 NBS officials from more than 10,000 gas retail outlets across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas. The findings reflect household spending on gas and are verified by an independent audit team to ensure accuracy.

The steady rise in gas prices comes at a time when many Nigerians are shifting from traditional fuels to cleaner energy options, making affordability a growing concern in the energy consumption landscape.
