Benue killings: CAN urges govt to declare state of emergency in affected areas

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the ongoing massacre and horrific wave of violence in Benue State, which has resulted in the tragic loss of over 200 lives.

The association, while urging the Federal Government to act with urgency to stop the mayhem, demanded immediate deployment of reinforced security personnel to protect vulnerable communities.

CAN also called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the most affected areas.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, lamented that for too long, the people of Benue have been subjected to recurrent assaults, often blamed on armed groups, without meaningful intervention or justice. 

Okoh stated that this persistent failure to safeguard citizens and bring perpetrators to account has emboldened attackers and prolonged the cycle of violence

He said, “These senseless killings have inflicted immeasurable pain on families, devastated communities, and further entrenched the insecurity threatening our nation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.”

Okoh called for a thorough and transparent investigation, including the swift prosecution of all those responsible.
He asserted that justice must prevail to break the grip of impunity fueling these atrocities, just as he appealed to the international community to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and rebuilding trust in Benue State.

Okoh concluded by reiterating CAN’s unwavering commitment to defending the sanctity of life and dignity of all Nigerians.
