Akwa Ibom Governor Formally Defects to APC

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially switched his allegiance from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During the defection ceremony on Friday in Uyo, the governor was given a broom, which is symbolic of the APC.

Several APC governors are attending the ongoing event, including Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who also chairs the Progressive Governors Forum; Bassey Otu of Cross River; Babajide Sanwo-Olu from Lagos State; and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.

Also present are Governors Sheriff Oborevwori from Delta, Monday Okpebholo from Edo, and Francis Nwifuru from Ebonyi.

Remember that the governor had alluded to the political change at a recent town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi.

“It’s time to make a change,” Eno announced. “We need to align the state with the APC at the federal level.”

He mentioned that the decision was made following extensive consultations with political stakeholders.

Gov Eno’s Move to APC Triggers Resignation of Akwa Ibom Commissioner

Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom State, has officially resigned from his position following Governor Umo Eno’s announcement of his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr. Ememobong shared the resignation letter on Facebook about an hour after Governor Eno publicly announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC at a Government House event on Friday.

Weeks prior to the announcement, Governor Eno expressed his plan to switch from the PDP to the APC. He advised cabinet members unwilling to join him in this move that they should resign. “Get ready to step down on the day I declare my departure because your allegiance is entirely with me as an appointee,” he stated. “You cannot remain in my cabinet while opposing party lines; that’s just how it is.”

In his resignation letter, Mr. Ememobong cited the governor’s previous instruction as the reason for stepping down. He stated, “I have submitted my resignation to the Governor today in accordance with his directive that appointees unwilling to accompany him on his political journey to the APC should resign.”

“I respect the Governor’s personal decision, but I cannot participate in that journey. My choice stems from my commitment to principled politics and my long-standing opposition to that political platform—a stance continually affirmed by many Nigerians across various sectors,” he stated.
