USA based Medical Foundation partners with Abia govt on healthcare

The United States of America ( USA ) based Quantus Medical Foundation ( QMF ) in partnership with the Abia State Government, through its Health Care Rebirth Initiative ( AHCRI ), has activated and commenced a structured healthcare transformation programme in the state.

QMF, a healthcare nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming healthcare delivery through culture change, envisions that its partnership with the Abia state government will lead to a sustainable strengthening of patients safety, compassionate care, emergency preparedness, workforce support, and accountability in the state-wide healthcare delivery.

The week-long programme consisted of leadership engagement with the Abia State Ministry of HealthAbia State Ministry of Health, Basic Life Support (BLS) training for over sixty healthcare personnel drawn from various public health institutions in the state, and the training Patient Liaison Officers (PLOs) who were deployed to support stronger emergency response, better patient experience, and more accountable hospital operations in different hospitals in Abia State.

The programme brought together doctors, nurses, midwives, laboratory professionals, allied health personnel, porters, hospital leadership, and Health Ministry officials in a coordinated effort to strengthen care delivery in Abia State.

The Abia State Healthcare Rebirth Initiative (AHCRI), a vision of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti,Dr Alex Otti, aimed for a broader, safer, more responsive, and enhanced patient-centered healthcare system in Abia State, is in partnership with Quantus Medical Foundation, and coordinated by the foundation’s founder and USA- based Physician, Dr Nnenna Ihekoromadu.

Speaking at the engagement,
Dr. Ihekoromadu, said: “the basic life support (BLS) and emergency response training for frontline healthcare professionals, including structured engagement around compassionate care, patient safety, workflow improvement, and workforce accountability are designed to help develop and refine a practical culture-change model that can strengthen hospital performance, especially in emergency settings where time, teamwork, and preparedness are critical”.

The trained PLOs were deployed to Abia Specialist Hospital, Umuahia, General Hospital, Aba and Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba. This, according to her, will improve patient flow, strengthen communication between patients and providers, support compassionate care, and thus escalate operational issues in real time to enable an expedited resolution of challenges.

Dr. Ihekoromadu emphasized that “AHCRI is positioning Abia State to pilot a more responsive model of healthcare delivery, grounded in Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (CARE)”.

She revealed that Quantus Medical Foundation, through its WeCare Nigeria Initiative, had earlier undertaken a similar programme at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu (UNTH),

Commenting on the Initiative, the Chief Medical Director , Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, Professor Ijeoma Nduka, noted: “we have come to collaborate with QMF, our Nigerians in the diaspora who have come from a more exposed environment ( USA), to rob off what they have learned and practice in the USA down here in Nigeria. This project is all about cultural change, The team has come to work with us in Abia State so that we can do better in what we do and need to do.”

She added: “they are here to ensure that our patients get the highest form of service that we should be known for. They are more like liaisons in between the patient and the service, and we wholeheartedly accept it because we know that this project has come to stay.”

In her comments, the Programme Director of WeCare Nigeria Initiative, Chibugo Obinwa explained more: “our mission is to partner with Abia State Government on their Healthcare Rebirth Initiative, to ensure that there’s care, compassionate care in the healthcare system”.

On the programme sustainability
she said: “we are always concerned about sustainability, that’s why we are having training, we are also going to retrain, and the structures are being put in place.

“In Abia State today , the healthcare system is getting better, there’s quality healthcare. Citizens are now feeling that they have access to quality healthcare. They will see that there’s a new structure in place”.

The coordinator of Quantus Medical Foundation NextGen, Miss Nikki Olaleye, spoke on the involvement of young people as a sustainable strategy to promote the culture change that QMF seeks in the health sector: “I am part of a small, selected team of college graduates and college students who are working with Qantas Medical Foundation to try and expand the healthcare system in Nigeria. In NextGen, we are involved with a lot of the coordination and mostly, like, administrative tasks. So we help out with social media, we help out with different types of coordination”.
