Shettima to Govs: Step Up Campaigns Against Open Defecation

Vice President Kashim Shettima has advised governors to double their efforts in tackling open defecation, citing its consequences on health and dignity.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged the governors of all 36 states to enhance their efforts to eliminate open defecation within the next five years. This appeal was made during the 5th anniversary of the ‘Clean Nigeria:

Use the Toilet’ campaign and the unveiling of the Revised Strategic Plan at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Represented by Ibrahim Hadejia, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Shettima emphasized the importance of securing high-level political backing from state governments to effectively promote the campaign, particularly at the sub-national level.

He highlighted the significant economic potential within Nigeria’s sanitation sector, suggesting that aligning these opportunities with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda could lead to job creation, alternative energy solutions, and the production of biological fertilizers.

Shettima stressed the necessity of re-evaluating key advocacy and awareness strategies, presenting the new Strategic Plan as a detailed framework aimed at ensuring reasonable access to sanitation facilities by 2030.

He concluded by calling on State Governors to lend their support in driving the campaign at both State and Local Government levels to achieve the goal of an Open Defecation Free Nigeria within the specified timeframe.
