Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over what he described as “troubling developments” in Nigeria’s democratic space, following the reported arrest of Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar.

In a statement issued on Monday, Obi said he received information early in the day that the revered religious leader was taken into custody by authorities shortly after hosting him during a visit to Kaduna on Sunday.

Describing the situation as disturbing, Obi said the arrest reflects a growing pattern of intimidation, shrinking civic freedoms, and harassment of perceived political opponents. He warned that such actions threaten the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him, the nation must uphold freedom of speech and movement, which he noted are fundamental pillars of any democratic society. “Suppression and intimidation of dissent can never stand in a democratic society,” he cautioned, urging the government to respect the rule of law.

Obi further appealed to actors attempting to “undermine Nigeria’s fragile democracy” to desist and allow democratic principles to guide their conduct toward citizens.

He concluded by insisting that the alleged arrest must not be allowed to set a precedent that endangers civil liberties across the country.
