NUT Demands Urgent Action as Fresh Video of Abducted Oyo Teachers, Pupils Emerges

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts towards the safe and immediate release of pupils and teachers abducted from Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the state Chairman of the union, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and Secretary, Comrade Salami Olukayode, the NUT expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of the victims, describing the situation as increasingly distressing.

The union said its concern was heightened by the emergence of another video reportedly released by the abductors, showing some of the kidnapped teachers in difficult conditions while appealing for their freedom.

According to the NUT, the development is heartbreaking and unacceptable, noting that no child or teacher deserves to be subjected to such an ordeal.

“The prolonged stay of the abductees in captivity is causing immense psychological trauma to their families, school communities, and the entire teaching profession,” the statement read.

The union called for expedited and more decisive actions from the government and all relevant security agencies, stressing that the situation requires coordinated and intelligence-driven efforts to secure the victims’ release.

While acknowledging ongoing interventions by the government and security operatives, the NUT maintained that time is of the essence, warning that every additional day spent in captivity worsens the emotional and psychological condition of the abductees.

The union urged authorities to strengthen surveillance, improve community intelligence gathering, deploy all necessary operational resources, and explore diplomatic approaches that could facilitate the safe rescue of the victims.

It also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing rescue efforts.

Reaffirming its support for the families of the abducted teachers and pupils, the NUT said it remains committed to advocating for safer learning environments across the state.

“We remain committed to ensuring that our schools become safe havens, never battlegrounds,” the union stated, while demanding swift action, renewed commitment, and unwavering resolve from all authorities involved in the rescue operation.

The abduction, which occurred in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, has continued to generate anxiety among residents, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector, with calls mounting for the safe return of the victims.
