The Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde and the Speaker of the State Assembly, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin have been presented with Impact Awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Passage, Assent , Gazetting and Execution (PAGE) of Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, VAPP in Oyo State. 
The awards were presented to the duo by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, WFD at the public presentation of the VAPP Law in Ibadan.
Others who also received Impact Awards for their efforts and support in the passage of VAPP Law in Oyo state were member representing Ogbomoso North State Constituency who doubles as the Chairman, Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs and Community Development, Hon Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji , managements and staff of the State Ministries of Justice and Women Affairs and Social Inclusion.
The VAPP Law was passed in Oyo State on the 28th of December, 2020 making the State one of the firsts in the country to pass the bill into law.
Governor Seyi Makinde whose award was received by his wife , Mrs Tamunominni Makinde said Oyo State has set the pace again especially by being among the foremost states to pass, assent, gazette commence the implementation of VAPP Law.
According to the Governor, the VAPP law is meant to protect the citizens of Oyo State against every form of violence hence there’s the need for everyone to be aware of its existence and provisions.
Earlier the Speaker, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin said the VAPP Law which was enacted by the National Assembly in 2015 has now been domesticated by thirty-one out of the thirty-six states of the federation.

“I am delighted that Oyo State is among the States that has passed the Bill into Law. The Oyo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2021 is a Law to eliminate violence in private and public life, prohibit all forms of Violence Against Persons and to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders and for related matters.
” The purpose of the VAPP Law, 2021 (VAPP) is to reduce the equality gap between all genders as well as cut down the country’s very high incidence of Gender Based Violence (GBV) which affects women ad girls. The Law also redefines rape and is the first Nigerian Law to recognize that rape can involve male victims. In addition the Oyo State VAPP Law, 2021 provides a legal framework that protects victims of Female Genital Mutilation, denial of inheritance and succession rights, forced marriage among others.
” The VAPP Law, 2021 is very comprehensive and serves as a benchmark for offences such as rape. The Law is an improvement on the penal code in relation to violence as it makes provisions for compensation for victims as well as protection of their rights. ” Oyo Speaker said.
He used the medium to acknowledge the efforts and support of all members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, the management and staff of Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion and that of Justice towards the passage of the law while also specially appreciating Member representing Ogbomoso North State Constituency, Hon Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji for sponsoring the VAPP Bill.
In her remarks, Hon Oladeji said the VAPP Law was all encompassing as it is applicable to all forms of violence.
” Any form of violence like physical, political, emotional, economic, sexual and all actions and inactions capable of causing harassment are captured in the law. Now that the law has been fully gazetted , it is now ready to be used to prosecute offenders.
“For us in the Oyo State House of Assembly, our job has not finished. We will continue to provide adequate oversight on the law and subsequently have a post legislative scrutiny of the law yo ensure it meets the needs of our people. ” Hon Oladeji added.
Other stakeholders at the ceremony called for proper sensitization on the provisions of the VAPP law.
