The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the rehabilitation of illicit drug users and their reintegration into the society.

The Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Mr Ezechukwu Obonna, stated this while addressing newsmen in Owerri on Friday.

Obonna made the remarks while highlighting the state government’s efforts to tackle drug abuse, as part of activities to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse.

He said that the state government, among other efforts, donated Hilux vans to the Imo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to support its operations.

He added that the governor’s wife renovated a rehabilitation centre for the NDLEA to facilitate the treatment and reintegration of drug users.

The special adviser commended the governor for prioritising the welfare of young people through people-oriented investments that have enhanced the livelihoods of youths and the Imo populace at large.

Obonna further reaffirmed the governor’s continued support for the NDLEA’s activities in Imo to ensure optimal results.

He called for collective effort to enable the state tackle the menace of drug abuse effectively.

“I advise drug users and traffickers to desist immediately. The negative consequences of drug abuse are avoidable, and a drug-free society is possible.

“We must report drug traffickers. They are stealing the future of our youths, and we must not allow that,” he added.
