The Oversight Committee of the House of Representatives on Health Institutions paid a courtesy visit to the Hospital Management under the leadership of Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo on Thursday, 30th of November, 2023.
Addressing the Hospital Management, the Oversight Committee Chairman, Hon. Amos Magaji said the courtesy visit is to majorly look into the institution’s performance in the last two years and to make a tour of some of the ongoing projects embarked upon by the Hospital Management between 2022 to 2023.
Welcoming the Members of the House Committee on Health Institutions to the Boardroom, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee on Education and Training, Dr. Olukayode Iyun stressed the need for increased collaboration between health institutions and policymakers, advocating for policies that would enhance the overall healthcare system. He expressed optimism that the committee’s visit would provide valuable insights leading to strategic intervention that could address the existing gaps in the healthcare sector.
Dr. Iyun highlighted the challenges faced by the University College Hospital ranging from infrastructure limitations, incessant power outage, shortage of man power due to continuous talent flight (Japa Syndrome), lack of adequate equipment, inadequate water supply e.t.c
Hon. Amos Magaji, alongside other Committee members, later held a brainstorming meeting with top management staff, Heads of Department and Unions, on how to move the Healthcare Institutions on a progressive motion.
Hon. Magaji however promised to work with other Honourable Members of the House of Representatives to urgently look into the challenges faced with Health Institutions in Nigeria with a view to proffering solutions.
Dr. Iyun, however, acknowledged the importance of the role of the Committee in shaping the future of healthcare in the nation stressing the pivotal role of oversight in ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective utilisation of resources within health institutions.
