Four Nigerians Face Trial in Ghana for Allegedly Stealing Piggy Bank

Four Nigerian nationals have been charged in Ghana for allegedly breaking into residences in the Baatsonaa area of Accra, where they reportedly stole a piggy bank, commonly known as a susu box, along with other valuable items.

GhanaWeb reported that in early October, the Accra Circuit Court saw the appearance of suspects Moses Chiendu, Ugo Onyeka, Obum Nnebuo, and Wisdom Chukwu.

According to court documents, Onyeka and Chukwu are traders; Chinedu is employed as a carpenter, and Nnebuo is currently without a job. The four men stand accused of breaking into the residences of Leslie Nii Fio Mensah, who works for himself, and Abraham Kwaku Frimpong, a freight forwarder residing in the same building.

Items allegedly stolen during the break-ins included an HP laptop, a Samsung S6 Lite tablet, Samsung A32 and A33 phones, two JBL Bluetooth speakers, two JBL headsets, and a gold-colored Rolex watch.

The stolen items were estimated to be worth a total of approximately GH₵25,470, $2,200, and £2,500. The defendants are facing seven charges: conspiracy to steal; unlawful entry; causing unlawful damage; and theft.

Sergeant Priscilla Avorgah, the prosecutor, informed the court that “the room was forcibly entered and the items previously mentioned were stolen from those who filed complaints.”

She elaborated, “Their mission involved breaking into various homes to steal while the occupants were at work. The complainant’s house was the third one they targeted.”
