FG Tasks SUBEB PROs on Strategic Communication for Basic Education

The Federal Government has tasked the Public Relations officers of the State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) on the need to strengthen strategic communication for effective basic education in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, Mrs. Aisha Garba said this during the opening ceremony of a two-day annual training of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and SUBEBs head of Public Relations and Protocol held in Abuja.

She acknowledged the role of public relations to the success of any organisation, adding that the theme: Strengthening Strategic Communication for Effective Basic Education Delivery was apt.

The Executive Secretary, who was represented by the Deputy ES, Technical, Mr. Razaq Akinyemi, also called on Public Relations Officers to put the knowledge gained during the training into practice for the overall development of education in their various states and the country at large.

She noted that the landscape of basic education is changing rapidly to guide decisions, aggressively addressing the education of Out-of-School Children, enhancing Teacher Training and Development to empower our educators, and fostering Skills Development and Acquisition to prepare our children for the future.

Garba noted that UBEC under her supervision has unveiled and currently implementing articulated programmes specifically designed to revitalize basic education in Nigeria.

She however noted that the most brilliant policies and the most dedicated efforts can fail to achieve their full potential if they are not effectively communicated.

Speaking further, she said, “This is where you, our strategic communicators, come in. We are recognising the transformative potential and roles of communicating our efforts in the work we do. Your work breathes life into our policies. You are the storytellers who will convey the hope and the tangible benefits of the on-going reforms in the sector and our initiatives to every corner of your states. You are the bridge-builders who will foster trust and collaboration among parents, teachers, community leaders, and policymakers.”

The Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, UBEC, Mrs. Aisha Garba charged PROs to see themselves as central figures in this ongoing development, adding that the time for transformative impact is now.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Forum of SUBEB PROs, Mr. Richard Jonah Samanja urged UBEC to look into strengthening Public relations departments with adequate funds.

He promised the Forum’s commitment to the enhancement of basic education in various states, including Abuja.
