Ekiti State Government has called on local government chairmen to actively maintain security within their areas, urging them to take responsibility for ensuring the safety of lives and property.
During the third quarterly meeting of the State Security and Intelligence Committee held on Wednesday, at the Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, the Chairman of the committee, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd), emphasised the importance of collaboration between the council chairmen and the government to address security challenges in the state.
While acknowledging the relative peace Ekiti State has experienced recently, he condemned the recent rise in kidnappings and assured residents that the government is intensifying efforts to protect lives and property.
He attributed the security issues partly to incursions from neighbouring states facing heightened insecurity but he reassured residents that proactive measures are under way to curb such threats to peace and security in Ekiti.
Citing the recent kidnapping incident between Isan and Iludun, Gen. Ogundana described it as unfortunate but commended the swift action of the Commandant of Command Secondary School, Isan Ekiti, whose patrol team rescued a victim and ensured prompt medical attention.
Also addressing journalists, the Chairman of the Ekiti State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Oluwasegun Ojo, stated that council chairmen were already working closely with security agencies to enhance policing at the grassroots level. Ojo, who is also the Chairman of Ekiti East Local Government, reaffirmed that protecting lives and property remains a top priority, as security plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of the state.
