Ekiti State Government has refuted recent media reports alleging mass failure in the 2024 Common Entrance and Placement Examination.
Contrary to these claims, 97.43% of public primary school pupils (16,167 out of 16,361) and 97.28% of private school pupils (10,675 out of 10,859) successfully passed the exam.
In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Bimpe Aderiye, emphasised that the report of widespread failure was inaccurate. She provided a detailed breakdown of the performance, noting that 16,361 pupils participated in the examination, with 232 pupils absent. Of those examined, 2,235 candidates (13.47%) scored between 200 and 299 points, 11,493 (69.26%) achieved scores between 300 and 399, while 2,439 (14.70%) scored between 400 and 500 points.
Dr Aderiye explained that the issue lies not in the students’ performance, but in the capacity limitations of certain schools and the cut-off marks. She pointed out that the preference of some parents and guardians for specific schools, particularly the recently established Model Colleges and other reputed institutions, has led to an oversubscription, creating a bottleneck, while other schools still have available spaces.
The Commissioner reaffirmed Ekiti State Government’s commitment to providing free, compulsory, and qualitative education up to the Senior Secondary School level.
She also noted that no school in the state should be disregarded, given the extensive development projects and interventions carried out across the 203 public secondary schools which have now equipped them to deliver top-notch education.
