Atlantis Pediatric Hospital defends medical team over CMD suspension

Atlantis Pediatric Hospital has reaffirmed its confidence in the professionalism of its medical staff following the interim suspension of its Chief Medical Director (CMD) by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel (MDPIP).

The suspension stems from an ongoing investigation into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Esege, son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie, at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital. A coroner’s inquest in Lagos is currently examining the case.

In a statement on Monday, the hospital confirmed receiving a letter dated February 25, 2026—delivered March 5—informing it of the panel’s decision. While acknowledging the notice, Atlantis Pediatric said it has reservations about the action and intends to seek professional and regulatory support to address the matter.

The hospital emphasized that its medical team acted within the bounds of professional responsibility.

“As a healthcare institution dedicated to pediatric care, Atlantis Pediatric Hospital remains committed to the highest standards of medical practice, patient safety, and professional accountability,” the statement read. “We are confident that our medical professionals exercised reasonable duty of care and judgment, which will be established during the inquiry.”

Atlantis Pediatric stressed that the ongoing coroner’s inquest informs its decision to refrain from public commentary.

“Out of respect for the judicial process and to preserve the integrity of the inquiry, the hospital will exercise restraint in making public statements regarding this matter,” the statement added.

The hospital also extended heartfelt condolences to the Adichie-Esege family, describing their loss as deeply painful. Management assured patients, families, and stakeholders of its continued cooperation with authorities to ensure transparency and a thorough determination of the facts while maintaining the highest standards of pediatric care.
