Akpabio wins 2025 International Peace Award

Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has been named the recipient of the 2025 International Peace Award by the Global Peace Movement International (GPMI)—a recognition of his growing stature as a champion of peace, diplomacy, and visionary leadership

In a statement signed by GPMI President Dr. Mike Uyi, the organisation described Akpabio’s global strides as groundbreaking, particularly his role in restoring Nigeria’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) after a 50-year absence.

This move, the group says, marked a diplomatic turning point and showcased Nigeria’s renewed commitment to global cooperation.

“Senator Akpabio has redefined Nigeria’s international profile,” said Dr. Uyi. “By reclaiming Nigeria’s seat at the IPU, he has not only revived our diplomatic relevance but also inspired a new generation of parliamentary leaders across Africa.”

The International Peace Award, one of GPMI’s most prestigious global recognitions, will be formally presented to Akpabio in August 2025. The award celebrates individuals whose actions have significantly contributed to advancing peace, unity, and global understanding.

“His leadership on the international stage reflects a rare blend of courage, diplomacy, and commitment to peace,” the statement added. “Akpabio’s enduring impact will be felt for years to come—both in Nigeria and beyond.

The Global Peace Movement International praised Akpabio not just for his international influence, but for his deep commitment to unity and dialogue at home. The organisation said it hopes his example will inspire “a new wave of responsible and peace-driven leadership across the continent.”
