The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticised the Federal Government over the temporary closure of access roads around the Federal Secretariat Complex and Eagle Square for the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention, describing the action as an abuse of public office and an improper deployment of state resources.
Adebayo said the decision to restrict movement and suspend physical activities within key government offices undermined the neutrality expected of public institutions, arguing that state infrastructure and official working hours should not be used to advance partisan political interests.
According to him, the development raises concerns about the separation between government responsibilities and political party activities.
The criticism followed an official directive issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation announcing the shutdown of roads leading to the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II and III, during the period of the ruling party’s national convention at Eagle Square.
Under the arrangement, civil servants working within affected offices were instructed to work remotely, while permanent secretaries and heads of ministries, departments and agencies were mandated to ensure strict compliance with the work-from-home directive.
The temporary closure is expected to affect traffic flow and commercial activities within the central business district, with commuters and businesses anticipating disruptions throughout the duration of the event.
The development has renewed public debate over the use of government facilities for political gatherings and the extent to which official operations should be adjusted to accommodate partisan programmes.
