The Community Project Management Committees (CPMCs) on Friday received cheques from the Kwara State Government for the construction of twenty solar-powered motorised boreholes and twenty simple smart toilets across the sixteen Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The community-led water and sanitation project was approved by the Kwara State Governor, Malam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as part of the recommendations made by the Kwara Community-Based Organisations’ (CBOs) at the summit organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Kwara State Governor.
Presenting the cheques on behalf of the governor to the CPMCs after a two-day training organised by the Kwara State Social and Community Development Agency (KWSCDA) on community project implementation and management, the SSA on Community Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe urged the committees to justify the confidence reposed in them by the government.
According to Olohungbebe: “Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has continued to demonstrate his confidence in rural development through community-led approach in line with the world bank requirements. He has approved the release of fund to CPMCs for the construction of twenty solar-powered motorised boreholes and smart simple toilets across the state.”
“I need to also state it here the the contractors that will handle the projects have been mandated to promote local content while the CBOs should ensure that quality project is delivered. Hence, the entire process of the project is commuty- driven,” he added.
The benefitting communities included: Makebe, Idi-Ose, Aribidesi, Gaa-Mudi, Taiwo, Aboki, Balogun, Osunte, Apado, and Ganmo.
Others were: Areyi, Oke-Oyi Isin, Idi-Ogede, Illofa, Etan, Onisapa, Rokogi, Pakata, Oke-suna, Kulende, and Idofin-Igbanna communities.
Highlight of the training were presentations on Environmental Impact Assessment, Community Project Financing and Auditing, Community-Role in Project Management, among others.
The project, coordinated by the Kwara State Social and Community Development Agency (KWSCDA) and Kwara Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (Kwara-RUWASSA), is aimed at improving rural water supply and sanitation across the state.
